Her Majesty The Queen – 1926-2022

Ground Engineering is deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty the Queen. Our thoughts are with the Royal Family and the entire nation.

Foundation engineering company Bauer Spezialtiefbau is once again helping to transform Messe Frankfurt’s exhibition grounds in Frankfurt, Germany, with an excavation pit for its south entrance.

In 2020, Bauer Spezialtiefbau in joint venture with Weimer was commissioned to excavate a pit for a new exhibition hall on the same grounds.

This time around, Bauer Spezialtiefbau was commissioned by developer GZS GG Frankfurt Europaallee to construct another excavation pit, which will also house the foundations of a new hotel and office.

Its scope of services on the project additionally includes the production of foundation piles and a two-phase diaphragm wall, which form the basis for the construction of a 123m high skyscraper with a four-storey underground car park.

In the western part of the excavation pit, five layers of anchors are produced for back anchoring, while in the eastern part the bracing is provided by two layers of stiffeners running across the corner.

Bauer Spezialtiefbau has already completed the pile and diaphragm wall work. It has installed a total of 45 foundation piles with a diameter of 1,500mm fully cased with up to 17m empty bore, and the 240m two-phase diaphragm wall was built with a width of 0.8m down to a depth of 33m.

The excavation and the production of the first and second anchor layer are currently underway.

The logistics of the project have posed a challenge as the construction site is boxed in by the exhibition grounds and a railway line and there is limited storage space for plant.

As a result, both the material supply and the disposal logistics for the drill cuttings required extensive planning. A Bauer BG 39 drilling rig, a MC 64 cable excavator with grab and two Klemm KR 806 anchor drilling rigs have been used for the work.

Work started in January and is expected to be completed in November 2022.
