New technology and old-fashioned chores

Cleaning is something we have to do whether we like it or not. Some of us had cleaning methods passed down while growing up, while others have learnt on the go.

Regardless of how you started cleaning, many of us are fascinated by how to do it better.

When we want to find out how to clean something we head straight online to Google.

Plumbing supplier company PlumbNation has analysed Google search trends for the past 12 months and discovered just which cleaning trends we are looking up online.

The results show even basic cleaning tasks have us stumped, but new technology is starting to grab our interest.

Hoovering is another word for vacuuming, something most of us do at least once a week.

Searching the cleaning task online is well worth it with advice covering cleaning your vacuum, appliance reviews and bizarre hacks.

One of these surprising hacks revealed the benefits of 'raking' carpet before vacuuming. Seriously.

Pressure washers must have been on our minds last year with the appliance the fifth most search cleaning trend.

Unlike vacuums, pressure washers aren't something everybody has at home, but you can hire them.

They can be worth using at least once or twice a year to clean paving, decking and more.

You can even use one to restore a vintage table, like former Block contestant Jenna Densten did.

Carpets are a magnet for stains, especially food and drinks. So it makes sense that there were 7.8 million searches for carpet cleaning information in the last 12 months.

To save you the trouble of Googling carpet cleaning next time, here is a complete guide.

Before COVID-19 most of us assumed the air we breathed was relatively safe. Now we're more alert to the possibilities of pollution, dust and viruses in the air.

So we began googling air purifiers to find out just what they filter out from the air and how well they do it.

Mopping seems pretty straight forward right? You grab a mop, a bucket of water and a cleaning product and swish all over the floor.

It turns out it's actually not that simple. Many floor cleaners don't work as well as we expect, and for best results we need two buckets of water: one with the cleaning solution and one to rinse the dirt off.

Then there's all the different types of mops available, from traditional mop heads to flat versions.

When you realise there's a lot more to mopping than you think you can understand why it was searched 12 million times last year.

We might have spent more time inside during the pandemic but it seems we were pretty keen to keep our cars in top condition.

There was a whopping 76.5 million searches on Google for washing cars in the last 12 months, making it the most searched cleaning trend.

That must mean a lot of people are pretty good at getting their ride sparkling clean. It makes you wonder if they've been cleaning inside the car too, because the seats are dirtier than you think.
