Jeffrey Herrold was working on a coal barge along the Susquehanna River in Dauphin County on April 26, 1986 when he spotted the body in the water, floating toward him.

Part of the body washed directly onto the front deck of his anchored barge which, heavy with coal, sat low in the water. Herrold grabbed it and rolled it farther on board so he could secure it until police arrived at the remote location in Reed Township.
