Contractor Bam Construction has awarded Bauer Technologies a drilling and grouting contract for the development of the £260M Gateshead Quays scheme, which will include a new arena, conference centre, hotel and restaurants.

Bauer Group subsidiary Bauer Technologies will assist the construction of the new quayside complex over the next eight months. The new 12,500-seat arena will replace Newcastle’s Utilita Arena.

Bam Construction, working on behalf of developer Ask Patrizia, began enabling works on the site towards the end of last year.

Gateshead Council has led the development of the site, which involves around £300M of regeneration investment.

Full construction work will start this year under a separate contract. Bam replaced Sir Robert McAlpine  on the job last year.

Bam is working with several key partners, suppliers and subcontractors to ensure a smooth start to the work.

Bauer Technologies’ scope of works includes the consolidation of up to five proven worked coal seams by cement and pulverised fuel ash grout.

Using four specialist drilling rigs, Bauer will drill and inject low-pressure grout into approximately 3,200 vertical and inclined holes, to depths of up to 40m. The total drilled length will reach more than 100,000m.

Bauer Technologies managing director Michael Jones commented: “We’re delighted to be working with Bam Construction on this project, which is a vital site for Gateshead and the wider region.

“Our project team is already on site, and we are on track to complete our scope of works by September 2022.”

The scheme, which is set to transform the Gateshead Quays area, is due to be complete in 2024.

The North East Local Enterprise Partnership provided £5M from its Local Growth Fund to support designs and site investigations for the scheme, and a further £7M from government's Getting Building Fund to support the establishment of local infrastructure.
