A piling rig operated by Keltbray has overturned at the Ebury Bridge development site in Westminster.

Video footage of a toppled over Soilmec SR-75 piling rig appeared on social media this week.

A spokesperson from Bouygues UK, the main contractor on the Ebury Bridge Road site, said the incident involving the piling rig took place on Tuesday afternoon (1 March).

A Keltbray spokesperson also confirmed the incident and said: “Our health and safety site protocols were highly influential in ensuring there were no casualties or injuries.

“The area has been made safe, and while investigations are continuing to fully understand the circumstances of the incident and a safe recovery plan developed, it would be inappropriate to comment further or speculate as to the cause.”

Bouygues UK's spokesperson added: "We operate strict health and safety protocols on the site; nobody was injured and we are working with Keltbray, who are conducting an investigation, to understand the exact circumstances around this incident.”

The Health and Safety Executive told GE that it would ask the principal contractor to explain the causes of the incident and clarify the actions to be taken to prevent a recurrence.

"We will also promote the benefits of sustained compliance and organise a proactive inspection of the site. During the site visit we will look at the piling operation with a specialist inspector," its spokesperson said.

Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) chair Steve Hadley said the piling body is concerned by the incident; however, it is not in a position to comment while the investigation is taking place.

The FPS is collaborating with the contractor involved to learn the lessons of the specific incident.

As more information becomes available, the FPS will look to highlight any issues and publish guidance if required.

GE understands that this is the site of the £350M Ebury Bridge housing scheme. Westminster City Council handed the site over to Bouygues UK last November.

The Ebury Bridge Estate is expected to include 781 new homes.
