Russia Attacked Ukraine: Here Are Five Things to Know:
1. Last night, Vladimir Putin gave a televised speech announcing a, quote, “special military operation” in Ukraine, and warned the world not to intervene. According to U.S. officials, Russia then launched a full-scale, “unprovoked” attack on multiple fronts across Ukraine, from Russia and from Belarus.
2. President Biden put out a statement, vowing to “hold Russia accountable,” and said he’s imposing even stricter sanctions. Officials from the U.S. and NATO planned to meet today to coordinate a deeper response.
3. Russia claimed it was only targeting Ukrainian Air Force bases and other military assets, not civilians. Meanwhile, Putin says they just want to “demilitarize,” not occupy the country. So, we’ll see how that plays out over the coming days.
4. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared martial law, but told people not to worry, and that the U.S. was already mounting “international support” to help.
5. Stock futures and crypto markets plunged when news of the attack hit. There’s obviously a whole lot of uncertainty right now, so stay tuned.

Last month, HILARY DUFF’s friend Molly posted a video where Hillary has her 3-year-old daughter in a car without a car seat. Obviously, the Internet gave her hell. But in a new interview, Hilary said, quote, “It’s not like I’m driving on the 405 with my kids in the backseat without a car seat. You have no context. You don’t know where I am . . . “Do you know how many times I let my kids sit on my front seat once we get [close to our driveway] to pretend like they’re driving home? You’re telling me you’ve never put your kid in the backseat to drive a block before with an adult back there?” Since the initial backlash, the comments on the video have been turned off. The other day, ROSIE O’DONNELL told a story about how she ran into NICK JONAS and PRIYANKA CHOPRA at a restaurant. And she mistakenly assumed that Priyanka was the daughter of another famous Indian-American, DEEPAK CHOPRA. Its been 4 years since he died but comedy legend Jerry Lee has been accused of sexual harassment and assault by his past female co-stars. Actresses Karen Sharpe and Hope Holiday and others told their story to Vanity Fair. Sharpe claims that while filming 1964’s The Disorderly Orderly, Lewis “started moving in on” her. She told Vanity Fair “He grabbed me. He began to fondle me. He unzipped his pants. Quite frankly, I was dumbstruck.” She says Lewis never spoke to her again after the film since she turned him down. One actress said she didn’t report Lewis because “he was very big at Paramount. I was under contract to him and to Paramount, and I didn’t want to shake the boat. And Kanye got so upset over sound issues that he threw down his microphone. He never picked it up again. And during the last song, “Off the Grid”, Fivio Foreign was out of sync with the music, and trying to catch up to it the whole time. Guest appearances from Jack Harlow, Migos, Pusha T, Alicia Keys, and The Game and celebrities like Diddy and Elon Musk were there. TOM BRADY is doing a buddy road trip movie with Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Field, and Rita Moreno. But the TRAGEDY is that he will NOT be traveling cross-country with them in a car. At least it doesn’t seem that way. The movie is called “80 for Brady”, and it’s based on the true story of four best friends and New England Patriots fans who take a trip to Super Bowl 51 to see Brady play. The Lindenwood Lions had a pretty giant announcement this morning. The university requested to reclassify as Division I NCAA athletics and join the Ohio Valley Conference. Most of the university’s sports teams are Division II except the women’s ice hockey, women’s gymnastics, and men’s volleyball teams. Reps for the school said QUOTE: “Lindenwood anticipates starting to compete at the NCAA Division I level in the 2022-23 season. Upon transitioning to Division I, Lindenwood will be able to compete for conference titles but will be ineligible to participate in NCAA championships until the four-year transition process is complete.” Currently, SEMO and SIUE are in the OVC.
Major League Baseball will begin canceling regular-season games if the league and the MLBPA can’t come to terms on a new collective bargaining agreement by Monday. The games would not be made up and players would not be paid full-season salaries. It’s the first time the league has publicly said it would shorten the season if a new deal isn’t reached by the deadline. The league first gave the players the Feb. 28 deadline two weeks ago and reiterated it to them Wednesday. Citing health concerns, the league said it wants about four weeks of spring training — hence its Monday deadline. Opening Day is scheduled for March 31. The players have never acknowledged the deadline.
Troy Aikman is reportedly headed to ESPN next season to be the lead analyst on “Monday Night Football”. The deal is not complete, but it is expected to be done soon. Aikman’s contract is reportedly for five years, and is supposed to be near the $17.5 million contract that Tony Romo has with CBS. Aikman was also being considered for Amazon’s analyst role for Thursday night games, where he could have paired with legendary broadcaster Al Michaels. Wednesday’s report also noted Michaels has been consistent about wanting Aikman as his partner. Michaels has not finalized any deals for next season, but he will not be staying at NBC.
The United States captured the SheBelieves Cup for a fifth time in seven tries with a 5-0 win over Iceland. Catarina Macario scored goals in the 37th and 45th minutes and later assisted on the second of two goals by Mallory Pugh, who scored in the 60th and 75th minutes. Kristie Mewis made it 5-0 in the 88th minute. The Czech Republic finished third with two points in three games after a 0-0 tie with New Zealand, which wound up fourth with one point.
A stretch of highway in downtown St. Louis has been renamed Bobby Plager Memorial Highway after the St. Louis Blues legend. MoDOT finished installing the signs off of I-64/40 between Jefferson Avenue and Tucker Boulevard. Plager passed away in 2021 at 78 years old. Plager’s No. 5 jersey was retired in 2017 by the Blues. He played 10 seasons with the Blues.
The ECHL’s Orlando Solar Bears announced Wednesday they’ve signed former NHL forward Sean Avery to a standard player contract. Avery, 41, played 10 NHL seasons as a member of the Red Wings, Kings, Rangers and Stars prior to his retirement in March 2012. The winger recorded more than six times as many penalty minutes (1,533) as he did in points (247) during his NHL career. Avery became more known for controversial moments rather than his offense. That includes a six-game suspension in 2008 for referring to his ex-girlfriends who dated other NHL players as “sloppy seconds” in a comment to reporters.
Zach Johnson is expected to become the next Ryder Cup captain for the United States team. Johnson has served as a vice captain for the past two competitions under captain Steve Stricker. The U.S. squad earned a 19-9 win over Europe in 2021, but the Americans lost the 2018 event and haven’t won on European soil since 1993. The 2023 Ryder Cup is scheduled to take place at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome. Johnson is a two-time major champion with wins at the 2007 Masters and 2015 Open Championship. The 45-year-old remains active on the tour, making the cut at the Waste Management Open earlier this month
Former East St. Louis football star has been signed to a team in the new United States Football league. The Pittsburgh Maulers picked Jeff Thomas as their first pick on the second day of the draft. Thomas was a former undrafted free agent for the New England Patriots before he was signed. He also played at the University of Miami from 2017 to 2019. Former Battlehawks QB Jordan Ta’amu was selected as the 2nd overall QB by Tampa on Tuesday.
Today, 22nd ranked Ohio State played 15th ranked Illinois. Illinois is coming off a big win against Michigan State on Saturday. Ohio State easily beat Indiana on Monday. Tip off tonight is scheduled for 8PM. SLU and MIZZOU are off until tomorrow and Saturday.
