TennisSection previews the 2022 Cincinnati Masters as Felix Auger-Aliassime takes on Jannik Sinner in the third round on Thursday, August 18th, 2022.

Will Felix Auger-Aliassime build on his dominant victory over Alex De Minaur? Or will Jannik Sinner avenge his disappointing loss to the Canadian from Madrid? This promises to be high quality affair at the Cincinnati Masters as two of the ATP’s brightest young talents go head to head. Who do you think will advance into the quarterfinals?

Felix Auger-Aliassime suffered a chastening loss on home soil this past week, winning just three games in his quarterfinal defeat to Casper Ruud in Montreal. That result came on the back of a very promising run where Auger-Aliassime knocked out the likes of Nishioka and Cameron Norrie. But he has quickly moved on, now that matches are coming thick and fast in the build up to the US Open. The 22-year-old Montreal native was in top gear at the Cincinnati Masters as he dismissed Australia’s Alex De Minaur for the loss of just five games. He hammered nine aces and converted four of six break points.

Jannik Sinner, meanwhile, progressed into the third round after his opponent Miomir Kecmanovic retired hurt. Sinner led by a set and break before the Serbian called it quits after struggling physically for nearly a set and a half. The Italian young gun improves on his Cincinnati Masters record, having fallen in the second round stage to John Isner last season. He also improves to 17-4 on hard courts in 2022, making him amongst the top-performing players on the surface.

Felix Auger-Aliassime leads Jannik Sinner 1-0 in their head-to-head. That meeting took place three months ago on the clay of Madrid where Auger-Aliassime demolished the Italian 6-1 6-2. While I don’t expect anything remotely close in terms of score line to that Madrid meeting, that victory might give Auger-Aliassme some impetus to achieve more success against his opponent. Both these two players can generate some serious pace off the floor and play with a lot of attacking intent. This is such a tough call, and I reckon the Canadian comes out on top here.
