Geotechnical time capsule: One week left for submissions | Ground Engineering (GE)

The UK geotechnical community has until 28 February to submit their contributions to the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering’s Time Capsule Project.

The project aims to gather information on key developments within geotechnical engineering onto one online platform.

The International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSGME) has invited contributions from its past presidents, member societies, technical committees, corporate associates and the Young Members Presidential Group.

There is no strict focus or format for contributions to the project. Some societies have opted for a poster format with hyperlinks leading to relevant documents.

As an example, the French Geotechnical Society will be going through some of the recent history of geotechnics in France. It has decided to present five subjects or techniques which have either been invented in France or are frequently used in French practice. As part of this, the society is describing the inventor of the technique, as well as interesting projects using the method. If possible, it is also interviewing senior engineers that have been involved in these projects.

The French society’s time capsule will include information on Louis Ménard  and the pressuremeter test; Henri Camberfort and soil grouting techniques; Henri Vidal and reinforced earth, also called Terre Armée in French; the development of continuous flight auger piles; and finally French national research projects, which are joint industry and academia projects.

As the UK member of the ISSGME, the British Geotechnical Association (BGA) is also preparing a contribution to the project. It is currently looking for industry input on projects and innovations – both early and recent developments – to be included in the submission.

To suggest content for the UK section of the time capsule, please get in touch with GE editor Nia Kajastie, who is collating the information on behalf of the BGA.

Please send your submissions to Nia.Kajastie@emap.com by 28 February 2022.

ISSGME has set a delivery term of between February and April for the project. The time capsule’s launch will coincide with the 20th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, which takes place 1-5 May 2022 in Sydney, Australia.

The Time Capsule Project’s key aims are:
