The northbound (NB) I-405 straight off-ramp to Beach Boulevard will have a new traffic signal! The ramp will also be updated with five lanes including two dedicated right-turn and two dedicated left-turn lanes, as well as a shared lane for both right and left-turn movements.
As part of the final design for the intersection, the NB I-405 loop off-ramp will be permanently eliminated.
This work will be done using a full Beach Boulevard closure between McFadden Avenue and Edinger Avenue. Details for the closure are below.
Crews will close Beach Boulevard between McFadden Avenue and Center Avenue to activate the traffic signal for the NB I-405 off-ramp to Beach Boulevard and to perform restriping activities.
The closure is anticipated for 11 p.m. March 30, to 5 a.m. Thursday, March 31.
The permanent ramp closure of the NB loop off-ramp to Beach is also set for 11 p.m. March 30.

Crews will install pre-cast concrete girders for the Ward bridge over I-405.
The girders are the main horizontal support beams, known as the superstructure, for the new bridge. They are installed across the bridge’s substructure, the abutments and center columns.
This work will require a NB I-405 closure between the NB I-405 off-ramp to Euclid Street and the NB I-405 loop on-ramp from Brookhurst Street and a SB I-405 closure between the SB I-405 off-ramp to Warner Avenue and the SB I-405 on-ramp from Euclid/Ellis Avenue.
The closures are anticipated for:

Crews may close NB or SB I-405 on the night of Monday, April 4, if work isn’t completed over the weekend.

Crews will remove the falsework from the Goldenwest Street bridge over I-405. This will require nightly SB I-405 closures between the SB I-405 off-ramp to Westminster Mall Road/Goldenwest Street and the SB I-405 on-ramp from Center Avenue.
The falsework removal will also require Goldenwest bridge closures.
Nightly SB I-405 closures are anticipated to begin Monday, April 4,and will occur Monday through Friday. Closures will be scheduled 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday, and 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Friday.

Crews are installing falsework for the Warner Avenue bridge over I-405 using freeway lane reductions.
This work requires nightly SB I-405 closures between the SB I-405 off-ramp to Magnolia Street and the SB I-405 on-ramp from Talbert Avenue.
Nightly SB I-405 closures are ongoing Monday through Friday. Closures will be scheduled 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday, and 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Friday.

This work will require nightly NB I-405 closures between the NB I-405 off-ramp to S. Coast Drive and the NB I-405 on-ramp from Hyland Avenue.
Nightly NB I-405 closures are anticipated to begin March 30, and will occur Monday through Friday. Closures will be scheduled 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursdays, and 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Fridays.

REMINDER! Crews are constructing a temporary traffic signal at the Westminster Boulevard/Springdale Street intersection as part of the bridges’ reconstruction.
Activities include installing temporary wooden poles, concrete removal and restoration, permanent pole foundation work, as well as electrical work. After the temporary signal is complete, crews will begin construction of the permanent traffic signal.
Construction of the temporary signal is ongoing, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays, as needed for approximately three months.

NEW! Crews will continue installing piles for the foundation of the Newland Street bridge over I-405.
The foundation consists of three large diameter cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) piles. Crews will use an auger to drill large holes, install forms and steel cages and pour concrete into the holes to form the piles.
Pile installation activities are anticipated to begin as early as Thursday, April 7, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., for approximately one month, on weekdays and Saturdays as needed.
This work may also include intermittent nighttime lane reductions on northbound and southbound I-405, between Edinger Avenue and the Heil Avenue pedestrian bridge from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m..
Crews may mobilize equipment as early as 6 a.m., and some activities may occur from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. as needed.

REMINDER! Crews are working on the foundation of the southbound (SB) I-405/SR-73 HOV connector bridge. The foundation consists of 8 cast-in-drilled hole (CIDH) and 35 steel pipe piles.
The CIDH activity includes installing large-diameter casings approximately 200 feet into the ground.
The steel pipe piles will be driven into the soil until reaching a hard layer of earth beneath the structure foundation.
Pile installation activities are ongoing and will continue 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and weekends, as needed, through Spring 2022.
Daytime and nighttime lane reductions on SB I-405, between SR-73 and Bear Street are anticipated to support the work.
