Silent piling employed for Battersea Power Station works | Ground Engineering (GE)

Sheet Piling UK has used a silent piling method to help deliver an on-site construction road that gives construction vehicles access to the £9bn Battersea Power Station redevelopment site.

The newly constructed road gives construction vehicles better access to the site of Electric Boulevard, which will serve as the main gateway to the 17ha development and connect the Northern Line Extension station with the power station.

Because of the proximity of the underground station and residential properties, minimising vibration and noise impacts during the sheet piling works was essential and led to a silent piling methodology being used for these works.

In total, 150 steel sheet piles ranging in length from 7m to 15m have created a temporary but sacrificial earthworks’ support for a double-height road, with ramps for the use of London Underground construction plant.

With the local geology consisting of made ground, laid over granular terrace deposits on to London Clay, it was necessary for Sheet Piling UK to pre-auger the sheet pile line to ensure that sheet piles could more easily be inserted into the ground using the vibrationless, silent piling technique.

Installation of Emirates Steel sheet piles was carried out via the hydraulic pressing-in method, using a Kowan ZU100 pile press from the Sheet Piling UK fleet, served by a 70t crawler crane. This ensured that virtually no vibration or noise was produced.

The Sheet Piling UK team drew upon the company’s stockholding of Emirates Steel EZ Section sheet piles to ensure piling could start quickly and not be subject to price fluctuations.

Part of the steel sheet pile wall is designed to be temporarily propped using a hydraulic bracing frame, with the maximum retained height being up to 8.3m in total. Eventually, the sheet piles will become a back shutter, to which permanent reinforced concrete walls and floor slabs will be added, to form a two-storey basement box.
